Good Boy: How to Train Your Pet

Knowing how to train your pet properly can be one of the biggest challenges for dog owners. To train your pet dog successfully, factors like their emotional makeup, temperament, and personality have to be taken into consideration. So, what can you do if your dog constantly barks, jumps up on others, or shows aggression to other dogs or humans?

This article looks at some simple ways to train your pet successfully. First of all, what are the reasons why you need to train your pet?

Why Dogs Behave Badly

The pressures of life that a dog owner faces can sometimes impact on doggy behavior. For example, a lack of interaction, daily stress, and not having enough time to exercise your dog can all affect their behavior.

Also, dogs have natural instincts that some owners can’t accept like barking, digging, and chewing on items. Of course, any of these natural instincts can become a problem if done to excess.

3 Quick Training Tips for Dogs

Training a dog to behave well takes time and perseverance. However, there are 3 basic principles you should be aware when addressing a dog’s behavior issues.

Positive reinforcement

One of the best ways to train any kind of dog is to reinforce positive behavior and ignore bad behavior. So, try not to react if your dog behaves badly.

You can do one of 3 things:

  • redirect your pet’s attention away from a situation that is causing bad behavior
  • call on your pet in a happy voice, not a demanding one even if you are frustrated
  • give a time-out for bad behavior, i.e. restrict his freedom

Substitution

You can help retrain your dog’s bad behavior by substituting the unacceptable actions. For example, if your pet is chewing up the furniture, give him a hard chew toy. Chewing is a natural thing for dogs, you just need to get them to chew the proper items!

Reward system

One of the best ways to train a dog well is to have a reward system for good behavior. So, always have a handful of treats handy to reward any good behavior. Very soon, your pet will get into a mindset of wanting to please and knowing their boundaries when it comes to behaving properly.
